Strong earthquake of 7.1 is felt throughout Cuba

Havana, Cuba, Jan. 28.- A strong earthquake of magnitude of 7.1 was recorded on Tuesday southeast of Cuba, with a depth of 20.7 kilometers, without danger of a tsunami for the country, Dr. Enrique Arango Arias, chief, told Cubadebate of the National Seismological Service and deputy technical director of the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS).

The telluric movement occurred at sea, at 2:10 pm, 123.6 kilometers west-southwest of Cabo Cruz and was felt throughout the national territory, with greater force in the provinces of Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba, Granma , Holguín, Las Tunas and Camagüey.

The source itself added that so far no material or human damage is reported, and that taking into account the geological mechanism of the Eastern fault, “there is no danger of a tsunami for Cuba,” he said.

According to the latest update issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), there is no threat of a tsunami.
