The guardian of time (+ Photos)

Camagüey, Cuba, Feb 23.- Meisel Marrero Fernández is not a young man of coffee, at least that impression I got when, accompanied by a cappuccino, he decided to tell me some of his passions.

Graduated as an Art Instructor in the specialty of Theater, it was not the path of the boards that determined his walk; he turned a hobby into a profession to ensure that the time of many is always accurate.

“As a child I liked everything that had to do with mechanics and in adolescence I began to disassemble some clocks and fix them well, I did not forget where the pieces went, and empirically I came to this task”, he says while he seems to remember that yellow alarm clock that at his house marked the beginning of a path that was hardly traveled on the Island.

And surely you wonder how novel the life of a watchmaker can be when you find them in all cities willing to renew a battery or clean the humidity, but Meisel focused on the oldest and thanks to his wisdom the chimes of the Historic Center of Camagüey are kept.
“The first one that I repaired was the one located in the church of Nuestra Señora de La Merced, in the Plaza de los Trabajadores, and after the Archdiocese they called me to fix the others in the city (four in total). It was really a gratifying experience because it was like rescuing part of the history of several generations of Camagüey’s people, giving back to the city a sound that is part of its charm of more than half a millennium”.

And since then there has been no impossible task, thus it reached several of the oldest demarcations of Cuba to guarantee that the large hands continue their 24-hour circular path because “the magic of mechanical watches is not replaced by any very modern electrical device”, assures.
It is not an easy task at all, many of the parts that must be improved are larger and heavier than him. Finding the optimal materials isn’t always easy, but the pride of giving back memories always drives you.

That is why he would like other people to learn this profession, “perhaps with a workshop to take up this job because there are many watches of high heritage, family and aesthetic value throughout the nation”.
Meisel lives in the Camagüey municipality of Minas, from there he frequently leaves to bring back the oldest clocks to life as a good guardian of time. (By Diosmel Galano Oliver/Radio Camagüey) (Photos: Courtesy of the interviewee) (Translated by Linet Acuña Quilez)
