Constant dialogue for the cultural policy of Cuba

April, 2021.- On this day in 2003, Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz presides over the last day of the National Committee of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), which was in session at the Havana Convention Center.

The island’s artistic and literary avant-garde summoned the men and women of culture to express themselves with clarity and a spirit of justice in order to nurture the civic and humanistic conduct of their peoples.

Such an attitude -the appeal states- is one of the most notable events in these troubled days in which life and death issues are debated for the human species.

The Summit of the Guayaberas

The Organization of American States (OAS) is one of the continent’s greatest burdens for progress and sustainable development, since as a regional mechanism it only serves to cover the backs of the US government.

With a roadmap so servile to the empire, to its purposes of domination and exploitation, it was clear that the Cuban Revolution would have no place in that body, since respect for the needs of the majorities was driving the project of the largest of the Antilles, and neither in the sixties of the last century nor today is it profitable for corrupt politicians.

“64 years ago, the repudiable OAS was created,” Fidel wrote on April 13, 2012, in the article entitled La Cumbre de las Guayaberas. The grotesque role of that institution cannot be overlooked. A large number of people, perhaps hundreds of thousands, were kidnapped, tortured and disappeared as a result of their agreements to justify the coup against the reforms of Jacobo Árbenz in Guatemala, organized by the Yankee Central Intelligence Agency. Central America and the Caribbean, including the small island of Grenada, were victims of the interventionist fury of the United States through the OAS”.

And the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution noted: “His nefarious role in the South American sphere was even more serious”, where last century coups were used to cut off any progressive movement.

In the 21st century, the mode of action of the regional mechanism did not change much, as an effective guardian of North American interests from the Rio Grande to Patagonia.

A context in which Cuba prefers to maintain its sovereignty and promote projects such as the Bolivarian Alternative for the Peoples of America or the Common Market of the South, in which the sustainable development of nations, respect for cultural diversity and the preservation of the environment, among other views that are completely alien to the Organization of American States.
